About the event
Oryan Peterson-Jones was born in Arcata, California during a cold November rain. After graduating from Humboldt State University with a degree in Music As A Cultural Metaphor, he was inspired to explore the globe with purpose; collecting instruments, field recordings, stories, and gems of wit and wisdom. Oryan began performing behind the Redwood Curtain in the late nineties, developing his signature fast finger-picking guitar style playing alongside the outsider folk ensemble, Die Geister Beschwören, and 23-year running, psych-rock mavens, Datura Blues. While these projects satisfy a collective effort and engage in more grandiose musical pursuits, Oryan’s solo output demonstrates an enthusiasm for Ethnomusicology, with camaraderie towards American Primitive and the New Weird America. He has also been heavily involved in the Pacific-Northwest music scene as a booker, promoter, and event coordinator, radio personality, graphic designer, music columnist, and documentary filmmaker. Recently recognized by the North Coast Journal as Humboldt County's Best Filmmaker in their Best of Humboldt 2022 competition, Oryan's documentary, ¡Gracias, Santiago!, about Carnaval culture in Santiago de Cuba, has won several awards. A mini-series about Senegalese musicians, also filmed on-location, is currently in post production. Oryan co-manages BPBS Arts & Media, a freelance audio/video production team and boutique label, with his longtime bandmates. He currently hosts two shows on Arcata’s independent radio station, Humboldt Hot Air, and performs regularly around Humboldt, consistently releasing new music on several international record labels. He looks forward to an upcoming music tour of Australia.
